DK Illustrated Family Bible
by Peter Dennis
from DK CHILDREN
Whether you see the Bible as a literal revelation of God's word, a guide for life, or a wonderful set of stories, The DK Illustrated Family Bible--a colorful, accessible reference source---can be the cornerstone of your family's knowledge of scripture. Based on the modern English of the New International Version Bible, this stunning, lavishly illustrated 384-page book is an interpretation of the Bible rather than a complete edition. The most important stories, such as "The Tower of Babel" and "The Sower," are presented chronologically with full-color illustrations supported by helpful captions. Each story is complemented by illustrated side panels explaining key words and concepts, as well as by photographs of actual sites, artifacts, and works of art. The people of the Bible are defined in appendices for both the Old and New Testaments and throughout the text as needed.
The production team for the book included advisors from different denominations, ensuring that all faiths are treated with equal respect. Jewish and Middle Eastern history and traditions are explained in context, providing a better understanding of the period and the rise of Christianity. As a reference for both youngsters and adults, this beautifully designed, thoughtfully arranged book offers a superb introduction to the basic Biblical stories and to the significance of the Bible. (Ages 10 to adult)
Explications of particular passages and clear explanations of key words are backed up by extensive maps, works of art and photographs.

Children's Illustrated Bible
by Selina Hastings
from DK CHILDREN
In this outstanding edition of the Bible, the stories of the Old and New Testaments are retold by Selina Hastings in a lucid, flowing style for children's enjoyment and edification. Hastings consulted with a cadre of educators, scholars, and religious advisors to retain the original feel and poetry of the Bible, while appealing to contemporary young readers with clear, lively language. The somewhat lackluster illustrations on every page are not nearly as compelling as the stories themselves, but the variety of other artwork, including maps and color photographs of artifacts, plants, biblical places, animals, people, and architecture, makes up for any deficit there. All the best-known parables and teachings are here, including "The Plagues of Egypt," "The Birth of Jesus," "Jacob's Ladder," "Noah's Ark," "Judas Plots to Betray Jesus," and "The Resurrection," among many others. This volume also includes a "Who's Who in the Bible Stories" as well as quotations from the King James Bible, identified by chapter and verse. Hastings has written several other collections of Bible stories, including The Birth of Jesus and The Miracles of Jesus. And for a smaller, stockier version of the same book, check out Hastings's The Children's Illustrated Bible. (Ages 8 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Developed in conjunction with a panel of religion consultants, this indexed anthology for young readers presents more than one hundred stories from the Old and New Testaments, accompanied by more than six hundred photographs, maps, and illustrations.
The Life of Jesus in Masterpieces of Art (Viking Kestrel Picture Books)
by Mary Pope Osborne
from Viking Juvenile
Through the centuries that have passed since the birth of Jesus, millions have found inspiration in the story of His life. Nowhere are the beauty, the suffering and the joy of that story more vividly told than through the work of the great artists it has inspired, including Botticelli, Fra Angelico, Giotto, and many others. Mary Pope Osborne's fresh retelling of the tale that begins with the birth of a baby in a stable combines with some of the world's great masterpieces of Renaissance art to produce a beautiful celebration of the life of Jesus. At the back of the book, the title, artist, and date of each work is noted. Based on the gospels and handsomely produced with fifth-color gold ink, The Life of Jesus is a book to treasure for readers of any religious faith. Mary Pope Osborne is the author of more than thirty books for young readers, including One World, Many Religions, Rocking Horse Christmas and the Magic Tree House series.
Who's Who in the Bible
by Stephen Motyer
from DK CHILDREN
As the title suggests, this is more a reference book than bedtime reading, but it is exceptionally well-illustrated (by Peter Dennis) and shares with the best reference books that hypnotic quality that can lead to hours of random browsing. Although split into sections that tell a particular story (e.g. "The Patriarchs," "The First Israelite Kings," "The Twelve Disciples") most of the text is given over to roughly 100-word biographies--many illustrated--of individuals. These range in familiarity from Abraham and Moses to Sihon and Achish, and are interspersed with dozens of useful little insets on subjects such as the Exodus and the Divided Kingdom. (Ages 6 and older)
Who's Who in the Bible introduces hundreds of the characters named in the Bible. People appear in sequence, following the Bible's storyline, and are also grouped thematically, such as Moses and the Israelites, The Kings of Judah, and The Twelve Disciples. Biographical entries for more than 400 Bible characters are grouped thematically. Finely detailed color artworks fit faces to the names, while illustrated feature boxes tell the stories of major personalities such as David and Goliath or Paul the Apostle. Packed with color illustrations and photos showing key events, places, and objects. Chapter references for each character make it easy to look up the relevant texts in the Bible.
